The honest answer is: it's not hard, but it requires following exact steps. One small mistake — losing a seed phrase, writing it down insecurely, or using the wrong wallet type — can mean permanent loss of your assets. But if you follow a clear checklist, self-custody is actually safer than trusting any exchange with your holdings.

Here's the complete process.

The Self-Custody Spectrum (It's Easier Than You Think)

Self-custody doesn't mean you have to be a security expert. There are three levels, each with different trade-offs:

For most people, software wallet or hardware wallet covers your needs. Paper wallets are rarely necessary unless you're holding massive amounts and want zero digital fingerprint.

Step 1: Choose Your Wallet (Start Here)
